Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized by a combination of digestive symptoms that cannot be explained by structural or gut bacterial reasons. Patients with IBS can experience stomach pain, alternating constipation and diarrhea with gas and bloating. There can be a tendency to lean more towards constipation or diarrhea as well. When patients are feeling certain emotions, symptoms of IBS can be exacerbated.

Acupuncture can be beneficial in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome by first aiding in decreasing stress and other emotions that may be causing flareups. Secondly, in our experience, regular treatments begin to regulate digestion and decrease stomach upset and distention.

As with treating other ailments with acupuncture, what is most important is what the individual is experiencing. Each person with Irritable Bowel Syndrome has their own set of symptoms that need to be addressed. Spending time with our acupuncturists allows us to understand each person’s syndrome and develop a treatment plan tailored to them.

In an analysis of controlled trials, it was found that acupuncture can improve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, more specifically abdominal pain and distention, sensation of incomplete bowel movements, number of bowel movements per day, and quality of stool.

Irritable Bowel Disease

Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) is different than IBS in that the intestines show visible signs of inflammation and irritation. IBD is broken down into Chron Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. In cases of Chron Disease, the surface of the intestines become irritated and can have a hard time absorbing nutrients. Patients can experience stomach pains, diarrhea, weight loss and nutritional deficiencies. Ulcerative Colitis is characterized by ulcers within the intestines that cause diarrhea, with or without blood and mucous, and abdominal cramping and pain.

Similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, acupuncture treatments for Irritable Bowel Disease are tailored to each individual. Whether the patient be experiencing Chron Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, what is most important is the individual in front of us.

Acupuncture has been shown to decrease inflammation within the intestinal tract, improve quality of life, and decrease pain associated with both Chron Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

In the case of both Chron Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, the ultimate goal is to achieve remission and allow the patient to regain “normal” living without the constraints of constant abdominal upset.
