In treating herniated and bulging discs, similarly to sciatica, it is important to know where each patient is experiencing their pain. After discussing where pain is felt, our acupuncturists can treat the areas of pain and ideally ease the discomfort.
Acupuncture has been shown to increase quality of life and decrease pain without the potential adverse effects of other treatments. Acupuncture also activates parts of the brain that result in release of endorphins, serotonin, and other chemicals that aid in decreasing the sensation of pain.
Bulging and Herniated Discs
While herniated and bulging discs are different ailments of the spine, each can cause back pain due to compression of nerves. A bulging disc is similar to a bubble in a car tire, while a herniated disc is similar to a tear in the tire. In the case of the spine, when there is a tear in the disc, fluid is free to move out and press on surrounding nerves.
While herniated discs are more likely to cause pain, both herniated and bulging discs can cause pain, numbness, and weakness both close to the spine and traveling away from the spine, such as in an arm or leg.
